About Mike
Mike Dawson is a UK contemporary artist who
paints ‘impressionistic pop art’ usually
featuring iconic people, images and themes
from popular culture.
As a journeyman guitar player and a former
public relations consultant, art and creativity
have featured strongly in Mike’s life. A self-
taught painter, he creates progressive,
commissioned artworks that betray the
influences of Roy Lichtenstein, Claude Monet
and others. He explains: “I admire the bold
colour and vitality of pop art. As a
movement, it developed from the optimism
of the 1950s and mirrored the rise of
advertising, consumerism and celebrity
culture. My pictures are essentially pop art,
but often they have the added twist of an
abstract or impressionist painting.”
Originally from Birkenhead, Merseyside, Mike
lives in Elstree, Herts. His work has exhibited
at the Royal Academy of Arts (Summer
Exhibition and the RA’s annual calendar) as
well as at other international art shows and
regional art festivals. His ‘lockdown’ portrait
of Captain Tom Moore and the NHS rainbow is
on display in the reception of Watford
General Hospital; his painting of Nelson
Mandela is in the council chamber at Elstree
& Borehamwood Town Council; his ‘twin’
portraits of the Queen (commissioned to
mark her Platinum Jubilee) are on display in
local government buildings in Offenburg in
Germany and Fontenay-aux-Roses in France.
